Among the traditions that Austrians love are the Vienna Philharmonic’s New Year’s Concert, the performance of Hoffmannsthal’s “Jedermann” as part of the Salzburg Festival, and a handful of others. Over the past decades, this short list has gained another entry: Every year, the Vienna Johann Strauss Orchestra and its conductor Johannes Wildner celebrate Austria’s National Holiday with works by famous Austrian composers including of course Josef, Johann and Eduard Strauss, but also Joseph Lanner, Franz von Suppè and Franz Lehár. The Golden Hall at the Wiener Musikverein and the Stefaniensaal in Graz offer suitably festive settings for this exuberant celebration of Austria and Austrian music.
