Austrian State Prize “Europe” for International Orchestra Academy

The project “Accademia Vicino di Accumoli” of the Department of Construction and Environment was awarded with the Europe State Prize on June 14, 2022.

During a festive event in the Sofiensälen in Vienna, Karoline Edtstadler, Federal Minister for the EU and Constitution, awarded this year’s Europe State Prize on June 14, 2022. From a total of 143 submissions, the best projects in five different categories – “Europe at School”, “Europe in the Community”, “Arts and Culture”, “Innovation and Digitization” and “Future of Europe” – received the coveted prize. The “Accademia Vicino di Accumoli” project was successful in the “Arts and Culture” category.

On behalf of the entire team of the Accademia Vicino di Accumoli, Univ.-Prof. Dipl.Arch.ETH Dr. Christian Hanus, Head of the Department of Building and Environment and overall project manager of the Accademia Vicino, and conductor Univ.-Prof. Dr. Johannes Wildner, artistic director of the project, received the award. “It is a great pleasure for us that this flagship project, which is part of an overall strategy for the reconstruction of Accumoli and has a positive influence on the development of a new cultural society in the Accumoli region, is recognized with the Europe State Prize.”

Music as a contribution to the reconstruction

Since 2016, the University of Continuing Education Krems has been supporting the region around Accumoli, which was badly hit by earthquakes, with teaching and research projects at the “School of Reconstruction.” The aim of the efforts is not only the structural reconstruction but also the cultural, social and economic revitalization of the central Italian municipality. Against this background, the international orchestra academy “Accademia Vicino di Accumoli” was launched in Accumoli in 2021, including a concert series.

Since the previous year, the “Accademia Vicino” has been inviting young musical talents from all over the world to an orchestra academy with established greats of the international music scene in the summer. This is also a sign of regional cultural work, European cooperation and cross-border solidarity. The next orchestra academy will take place from August 11 to 24, 2022.
